Notes on the “Sales Book” of Bookbinder Musa Safvet Efendi

Abstract

This study aims to publish a transcription of the booklet entitled “Mücellit Safvet Efendi’nin Satış Defteri” (Bookbinder Safvet Efendi's Sales Book), housed in Süleymaniye Library under call number Süheyl Ünver Defter Koleksiyonu 00198. In this vein, the study begins by providing the biography of the bookbinder Safvet Efendi, the owner of the book, based on primary and secondary literature, as well as oral transmission from his family. Also, the details Süheyl Ünver shared about the booklet is discussed in detail. Additionally, it gives a brief evaluation on the writing materials and tools used in the production of manuscripts. Finally, the Latinized version of the sales book, consisting of 17 pages, is published in its entirety.
